27<\/sup>Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi.  On the way he asked them, \u201cWho do people say I am?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

28<\/sup>They replied, \u201cSome say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

29\u201c<\/sup>But what about you?\u201d  he asked.  \u201cWho do you say I am?\u201d
Peter answered, \u201cYou are the Christ.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What did Peter actually say?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mark: \u201cYou are the Christ\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew: \u201cYou are the Christ, the Son of the Living God\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Many Bible notes and commentaries acknowledge that here Matthew has added the additional phrase into the mouth of Jesus. (New Jerusalem Bible, pg 34)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1<\/sup>Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.  2<\/sup>When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did this man get these things?\u201d  they asked.  \u201cWhat’s this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles!  3<\/sup>Isn’t this the carpenter<\/strong>?  Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon?  Aren’t his sisters here with us?\u201d  And they took offense at him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4<\/sup>Jesus said to them, \u201cOnly in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.\u201d  5<\/sup>He could not do any miracles <\/strong>there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.  6<\/sup>And he was amazed at their lack of faith.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

53<\/sup>When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

54<\/sup>Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed.  \u201cWhere did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?\u201d  they asked.  55<\/sup>\u201cIsn’t this the carpenter’s son?<\/strong> Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?  56<\/sup>Aren’t all his sisters with us?  Where then did this man get all these things?\u201d  57<\/sup>And they took offense at him.

As you can see, Mark\u2019s version depicts Jesus as being powerless in the face of unbelief and was unable to do any miracles.  Matthew changes the Mark\u2019s version to eliminate this problem.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Scholars have also suggested that Matthew wanted to avoid the description of Jesus as a carpenter and therefore changed it, due to the general negative attitudes towards manual labor, which were characteristic among the elite of the Greco-Roman world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus Heals Many (Mark 1: 32-34, Matthew 8: 16-17)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n

32<\/sup>That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.  33<\/sup>The whole town gathered at the door, 34<\/sup>and Jesus healed many<\/strong> who had various diseases.  He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

16<\/sup>When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick<\/strong>.  17<\/sup>This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
\u201cHe took up our infirmities

In Mark Jesus heals many, but in Matthew he heals all!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

33<\/sup>\u201cWho are my mother and my brothers?\u201d  he asked.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

34<\/sup>Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, \u201cHere are my mother and my brothers!  35<\/sup>Whoever does God’s will<\/strong> is my brother and sister and mother.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

46<\/sup>While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him.  47<\/sup>Someone told him, \u201cYour mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

48<\/sup>He replied to him, \u201cWho is my mother, and who are my brothers?\u201d  49<\/sup>Pointing to his disciples, he said, \u201cHere are my mother and my brothers.  50<\/sup>For whoever does the will of my Father<\/strong> in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here, Matthew changes \u201cGod\u201d to \u201cFather\u201d in Jesus\u2019 speech in order to support later developing ideas about Jesus and God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Walking on Water (Mark 6: 45-52, Matthew 14: 22-33)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n

45<\/sup>Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.  46<\/sup>After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

47<\/sup>When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.  48<\/sup>He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them.  About the fourth watch of the night he went out to them, walking on the lake.  He was about to pass by them, 49<\/sup>but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.  They cried out, 50<\/sup>because they all saw him and were terrified.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Immediately he spoke to them and said, \u201cTake courage!  It is I.  Don’t be afraid.\u201d  51<\/sup>Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down.  They were completely amazed, 52<\/sup>for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.  23<\/sup>After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.  When evening came, he was there alone, 24<\/sup>but the boat was already a considerable distance[a<\/a>]<\/sup> from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

25<\/sup>During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.  26<\/sup>When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified.  \u201cIt’s a ghost,\u201d they said, and cried out in fear.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

27<\/sup>But Jesus immediately said to them: \u201cTake courage!  It is I.  Don’t be afraid.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

28<\/sup>\u201cLord, if it’s you,\u201d Peter replied, \u201ctell me to come to you on the water.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

29<\/sup>\u201cCome,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.  30<\/sup>But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, \u201cLord, save me!\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

31<\/sup>Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.  \u201cYou of little faith,\u201d he said, \u201cwhy did you doubt?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

32<\/sup>And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  33<\/sup>Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, \u201cTruly you are the Son of God.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Note the following changes and additions made by Matthew from Mark: Firstly, he omitted Bethsaida due to its geographical difficulty.  Secondly, Peter in Matthew\u2019s gospel addresses Jesus by the honorific title \u201cLord\u201d.  Thirdly, the disciples worship Jesus and finally they all confess that Jesus is the \u201cSon of God\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through time, like a snowball, the more the message of Jesus was passed around, the more it got bigger and better.  The above passage illustrates how Matthew modified the speech of individuals to produce the result, that Jesus is called \u201cLord\u201d.  Now it is true that Lord does not necessarily mean God.  But in the later Christian thinking it will mean exactly that.  Matthew was inadvertently setting the stage of Jesus\u2019 promotion to Godhead.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
