Drawing a smile on the faces of those in need, Muslims in San Antonio, Texas, are bringing the joy and compassion of Ramadan the homeless, sharing special iftar meals and offering a better understanding of their faith.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it may be us that are serving you, it is you that allowed us to come and extended to us the hand of charity, and for that we thank you,\u201d Sakib Shaikh, director of public relations for the Muslim Children Education and Civic Center (MCECC), told San Antonio Express-News on Monday, July 15.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Cooperating with the Muslim Cultural Heritage Society, the MCECC offered a special meal to some 300 members of the city\u2019s homeless center \u201cHaven for Hope\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The meal, served at Sunday evening, came at the time of Muslims\u2019 iftar meal in Ramadan.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The iftar was served by around 50 volunteers from both Muslim groups in the city who distributed plastic foam cartons filled with food to haven residents, including pastries, chicken kabobs, vegetable dumplings and other delicacies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The center\u2019s residents praised the initiative for offering them a chance to learn about Islam and its beliefs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do you celebrate Ramadan?\u201d asked StarLisa Leonard, standing in the interfaith chapel on the main campus grounds before dinner was served.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nazli Siddiqui, one of the Muslim volunteers, explained that Muslims fast on Ramadan to be mindful of their blessings, such as food to eat and water to drink, and to feel empathy for those who may be suffering.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome people in the world only eat one meal a day,\u201d said Siddiqui, a director of the heritage society.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe try to live that lifestyle for a month to create compassion.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After the meal, Muslims spread prayer rugs and white blankets inside the chapel for prayer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ramadan, the holiest month in Islamic calendar, started in the US on Tuesday, July 9.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In Ramadan, adult Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking and sex between dawn and sunset.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fasting is meant to teach Muslims patience, self-control and spirituality, and time during the holy month is dedicated for getting closer to Allah though prayers, reading the Noble Qur\u2019an and good deeds.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The majority of Muslims prefer to pay Zakah for the poor and needy during the month.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Breaking the Ice<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Bringing true Islam closer to the Haven residents, the initiative made quite an impact about Islam, Ramadan and its tenets.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou hear that Muslims have a strange religion, but it isn’t,\u201d Haven member Linda Downs said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe (Haven members) are at a bad time in our lives, and it’s so touching that they’re here sharing all this with us.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The idea of abstaining from food and water for long hours to feel empathy for those who may be suffering was also amazing for Downs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey sacrifice and fast for a whole month. It makes your heart feel full,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey’re nice people.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Although there are no official figures, the United States is believed to be home to between 6-8 million Muslims.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A US survey has revealed that the majority of Americans know very little about Muslims and their faith.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A recent Gallup poll, however, found 43 percent of Americans Nationwide admitted to feeling at least \u201ca little\u201d prejudice against Muslims.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
