{"id":1760,"date":"2013-09-01T11:15:17","date_gmt":"2013-09-01T11:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/rs\/en\/islamic-conference-cancelled-by-montreal-convention-centre\/"},"modified":"2013-09-01T11:15:17","modified_gmt":"2013-09-01T11:15:17","slug":"islamic-conference-cancelled-by-montreal-convention-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/r-islam.com\/en\/islamic-conference-cancelled-by-montreal-convention-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Islamic conference cancelled by Montreal convention centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-1759\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/rs\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/09\/canada%20conf.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; border: 0px none; margin-left: 7px; margin-right: 7px;\" width=\"425\" height=\"284\" \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A Muslim youth conference in Montreal, which drew criticism from the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois government, has been cancelled by the convention centre where it was supposed to be held.<\/p>\n<p>The Palais des congr\u00e8s, the city&#8217;s largest convention centre, announced Saturday it won&#8217;t hold next weekend&#8217;s event due to security reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made after a &#8220;security review,&#8221; the Palais des congr\u00e8s said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Entre Ciel et Terre conference \u2014 translated from French as &#8220;Between Heaven and Earth&#8221; \u2014 faced criticism from Quebec&#8217;s Minister for the Status of Women Agn\u00e8s Maltais.<\/p>\n<p>Maltais asked the Canadian government to bar some invited guests from entering the country, calling the speakers &#8220;radical Islamists&#8221; who don&#8217;t respect equality between men and women.<\/p>\n<p>The conference organizers defended their choice of speakers, saying they were only made aware of their guests&#8217; controversial statements through the media.<\/p>\n<p>Conference spokesman Ishaq Moustaqin says he doesn&#8217;t endorse these specific messages, but says his group can&#8217;t be held accountable for what was said outside of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t control what people can say. We assure the public that none of those messages will be allowed at our conference,&#8221; said Moustaqin.<\/p>\n<p>Several demonstrations were planned to protest against controversial Islamist preachers including a French citizen named Nader Abou Anas, who had made comments stating that a woman refusing to wear a headscarf was worse than having cancer or AIDS.<\/p>\n<p>Salam Elmanayi, the president of the Muslim Council of Montreal says the comments were distasteful, but considers them a blunder and says Maltais had no right to ask that Canada refuse the speakers entry into the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t let a civil servant somewhere sitting at his desk decide, who you&#8217;re going to say, what you&#8217;re going to say tomorrow and when you&#8217;re going to say it,&#8221; said Elmanayi. &#8220;Everybody has the right to come and say whatever they want to say.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a written statement the federal government said it was still considering all options.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, conference organizers said they were aware of the convention centre&#8217;s decision and were &#8220;working on the situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not yet known if organizers will try to hold the conference elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Soucre: CBC News<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Muslim youth conference in Montreal, which drew criticism from the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois government, has been cancelled by the convention centre where it was supposed to be held.
