{"id":382,"date":"2011-11-30T14:13:02","date_gmt":"2011-11-30T14:13:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/rs\/en\/muhammads-sword-part-1-of-2\/"},"modified":"2011-11-30T14:13:02","modified_gmt":"2011-11-30T14:13:02","slug":"muhammads-sword-part-1-of-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/r-islam.com\/en\/muhammads-sword-part-1-of-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Muhammad\u2019s Sword (part 1 of 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Description<\/span><\/span>:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Jewish atheist speaks about the notion that Islam spread by the sword.\u00a0 Part One: Emperors and Popes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-381\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/rs\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/11\/muhammad_s_sword_part_1_of_2_001.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"245\" height=\"163\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 15px; margin-right: 15px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Since the days when Roman Emperors threw Christians to the lions, the relations between the emperors and the heads of the church have undergone many changes.<\/p>\n<p>Constantine the Great, who became Emperor in the year 306 &#8211; exactly 1700 years ago &#8211; encouraged the practice of Christianity in the empire, which included Palestine.\u00a0 Centuries later, the church split into an Eastern (Orthodox) and a Western (Catholic) part.\u00a0 In the West, the Bishop of Rome, who acquired the title of Pope, demanded that the Emperor accept his superiority.<\/p>\n<p>The struggle between the Emperors and the Popes played a central role in European history and divided the peoples. It knew ups and downs. Some Emperors dismissed or expelled a Pope, some Popes dismissed or excommunicated an Emperor.\u00a0 One of the Emperors, Henry IV, \u201cwalked to Canossa\u201d, standing for three days barefoot in the snow in front of the Pope\u2019s castle, until the Pope deigned to annul his excommunication.<\/p>\n<p>But there were times when Emperors and Popes lived in peace with each other.\u00a0 We are witnessing such a period today.\u00a0 Between the present Pope, Benedict XVI, and the present Emperor, George Bush II, there exists a wonderful harmony.\u00a0 Last week\u2019s speech by the Pope, which aroused a world-wide storm, went well with Bush\u2019s crusade against \u201cIslamofascism\u201d, in the context of the \u201cClash of Civilizations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In his lecture at a German university, the 265th Pope described what he sees as a huge difference between Christianity and Islam: while Christianity is based on reason, Islam denies it.\u00a0 While Christians see the logic of God\u2019s actions, Muslims deny that there is any such logic in the actions of Allah.<\/p>\n<p>As a Jewish atheist, I do not intend to enter the fray of this debate.\u00a0 It is much beyond my humble abilities to understand the logic of the Pope.\u00a0 But I cannot overlook one passage, which concerns me too, as an Israeli living near the fault-line of this \u201cwar of civilizations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In order to prove the lack of reason in Islam, the Pope asserts that the prophet Muhammad ordered his followers to spread their religion by the sword.\u00a0 According to the Pope, that is unreasonable, because faith is born of the soul, not of the body.\u00a0 How can the sword influence the soul?<\/p>\n<p>To support his case, the Pope quoted &#8211; of all people &#8211; a Byzantine Emperor, who belonged, of course, to the competing Eastern Church.\u00a0 At the end of the 14th century, the Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus told of a debate he had &#8211; or so he said (its occurrence is in doubt) &#8211; with an unnamed Persian Muslim scholar.\u00a0 In the heat of the argument, the Emperor (according to himself) flung the following words at his adversary:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">These words give rise to three questio<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">s:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">(a)Why did the Emperor say them? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">(b) Are they true? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> (c)\u00a0 Why did the present Pope quote them?<\/p>\n<p>WHEN MANUEL II wrote his treatise, he was the head of a dying empire.\u00a0 He assumed power in 1391, when only a few provinces of the once illustrious empire remained.\u00a0 These, too, were already under Turkish threat.<\/p>\n<p>At that point in time, the Ottoman Turks had reached the banks of the Danube.\u00a0 They had conquered Bulgaria and the north of Greece, and had twice defeated relieving armies sent by Europe to save the Eastern Empire.\u00a0 On May 29, 1453, only a few years after Manuel\u2019s death, his capital, Constantinople (the present Istanbul) fell to the Turks, putting an end to the Empire that had lasted for more than a thousand years.<\/p>\n<p>During his reign, Manuel made the rounds of the capitals of Europe in an attempt to drum up support.\u00a0 He promised to reunite the church.\u00a0 There is no doubt that he wrote his religious treatise in order to incite the Christian countries against the Turks and convince them to start a new crusade.\u00a0 The aim was practical, theology was serving politics.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, the quote serves exactly the requirements of the present Emperor, George Bush II.\u00a0 He, too, wants to unite the Christian world against the mainly Muslim \u201cAxis of Evil\u201d.\u00a0 Moreover, the Turks are again knocking on the doors of Europe, this time peacefully.\u00a0 It is well known that the Pope supports the forces that object to the entry of Turkey into the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Is there any truth in Manuel\u2019s argument?[1]\n<p>Footnotes:<\/p>\n[1] Disclaimer: All views of this author are not held by IslamReligion nor purported by Islam \u2013 IslamReligion.<\/p>\n<p>Ref.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/513\/<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Description:A Jewish atheist speaks about the notion that Islam spread by the sword.\u00a0 Part One: Emperors and Popes.
