{"id":419,"date":"2012-02-16T13:54:28","date_gmt":"2012-02-16T13:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/rs\/en\/quraan-definition-of-the-termf\/"},"modified":"2012-02-16T13:54:28","modified_gmt":"2012-02-16T13:54:28","slug":"quraan-definition-of-the-termf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/r-islam.com\/en\/quraan-definition-of-the-termf\/","title":{"rendered":"Qur\u2019aan: Definition of the Term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>The word \u201cQur\u2019aan,\u201d a verbal noun, is equivalent in meaning to \u201cqiraa\u2019ah,\u201d as both come from the verb \u201cqara\u2019a\u201d which means \u201cto read.\u201d <br \/>That is, Qur\u2019aan literally means \u201ca reading or reciting.\u201d[1] However, the term \u201cQur\u2019aan\u201d has been historically used specifically to refer to the book which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam). The term \u201cQur\u2019aan\u201d is mentioned in a number of places throughout the book in reference to itself. For example: \u00a0<br \/>\u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verily, this Qur\u2019aan guides (humanity) to that which is most just<\/span>.\u201d[2] \u00a0<br \/>The name Qur\u2019aan is used to refer to both the Qur\u2019aan as a whole, as in the previously quoted verse; as well as to each verse or group of verses, as in the following verse:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\">And if the Qur\u2019aan is recited, you should listen to it and be silent, that you may receive mercy<\/span>.\u201d[3] <\/span> <span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>The Book has also been referred to by other names; for example, the Furqaan (The Distinction): \u00a0<br \/>\u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\">Blessed is He who revealed the Furqaan\u00a0 to His slave in order that he may be a warner to all the worlds.<\/span>\u201d[4] and the Thikr, (The Reminder):\u00a0 \u00a0<br \/>\u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verily, I revealed the Thikr and verily I will preserve it<\/span>.\u201d [5] <\/p>\n<p>The Qur\u2019aan could be defined as Allah\u2019s words which were revealed in Arabic in a rhythmical form to Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam). Its recitation is used in acts of worship and its smallest chapter (surah) is of a miraculous nature. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/> The Prophet\u2019s divinely inspired statements which were recorded by his followers are generally referred to as Hadiths. For example, the Prophet\u2019s companion (sahaabee), \u2018Umar ibn al-Khattaab, reported that he once said,\u00a0 \u201cVerily, deeds are (judged) by their intentions.\u201d [6] \u00a0<br \/>However, in some of his statements, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) attributed what he said to Allah; for example, another sahaabee, Abu Hurayrah, reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said,\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAllah, Most High, says, \u2018I am as My slave thinks of Me and I am with him when he remembers me. So if he remembers Me to himself, I will remember him to Myself and if he remembers Me in a group, I will remember him in a better group.\u2019 \u201d[7] <br \/>In order to distinguish this type of hadith from the previous type, it is referred to as hadith Qudsi\u00a0 (sacred hadith) and the former referred to as hadith nabawee\u00a0 (prophetic\u00a0 hadith). <br \/>The Qur\u2019aan, however, is not the same as hadith Qudsi for a number of reasons. First, the Qur\u2019aan is from Allah both in its wording and in its meaning, while in the case of hadith qudsee, its meaning is from Allah but its wording was the Prophet\u2019s (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam). Second, Allah challenged the Arabs and mankind in general to produce even a chapter equivalent to one of the Qur\u2019aan\u2019s chapters, and their inability to do so proves its miraculous nature. This is not so in the case of hadith qudsee. Third, the recitation of the Qur\u2019aan is used in salaah and is itself considered a form of worship. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said,\u00a0 \u201cWhoever reads a letter from the book of Allah, the Most High, will get a good deed (recorded for him), and each good deed is worth ten times its value.
