{"id":777,"date":"2012-05-21T07:44:21","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T07:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/rs\/en\/the-descriptive-titles-of-jesus-in-the-quran-part-1\/"},"modified":"2012-05-21T07:44:21","modified_gmt":"2012-05-21T07:44:21","slug":"the-descriptive-titles-of-jesus-in-the-quran-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/r-islam.com\/en\/the-descriptive-titles-of-jesus-in-the-quran-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The Descriptive Titles of Jesus in the Quran (part 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThe Messiah\u201d and \u201ca Miracle\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Description<\/strong>: A discussion of the name, titles, and description of Jesus in the Quran.\u00a0 Part 1: A look at the concept of the Messiah in the Judeo-Christian thought as well as Islam, and the title \u201cMiracle\u201d which God gives to Jesus in the Quran.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Islam, besides Christianity, is the only major world religion that recognizes Jesus.A Muslim\u2019s belief is incomplete without Jesus.\u00a0 Prophet Muhammad said:<br \/>\u201cIf anyone testifies that none has the right to be worshipped but God alone who has no partners, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, and that Jesus is God\u2019s servant and His Messenger and His Word which He bestowed on Mary and a Spirit from Him, and that Paradise is true, and Hell is true, God will admit him into Paradise with the deeds which he has done even if those deeds were few.\u201d<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[1]<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In other words, without sound belief in Jesus, one can never earn God\u2019s Paradise.\u00a0 As with other prophets of God, Muslims add to his name, alai his-salam, which means, \u2018Peace be upon him.\u2019<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[2]<\/span> Even though Jesus said, \u201c<strong>Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you,<\/strong>\u201d<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[3]<\/span> in the Gospel, Christians rarely use any honorific term but \u2018Christ\u2019, and this as part of his name.\u00a0 Though this may be due to the idea that the Christian does not pray for him, but to him, it shows that Muslims have a great deal of respect for him despite not sharing such a viewpoint.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Quran is the sacred scripture of Islam, and in it, more than ninety verses spread across fifteen chapters of the Quran discuss Jesus.\u00a0 Three chapters of the Quran are named after their reference to Jesus:\u00a0 the third chapter of Quran, \u2018The Family of Imran,\u2019 is named after the father of Mary;\u00a0 the fifth chapter, \u2018The Table,\u2019 is likely named after the last supper.\u00a0 Lastly, the nineteenth chapter is named after Mary.<br \/>His Name in the Quran<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In Arabic, Jesus is known as Eesa.\u00a0 In sixteen of the 25 places in the Quran where Eesa is used, he is called \u201cthe son of Mary\u201d (Ibn Maryam).\u00a0 Since he had no father, he was named so after his mother.<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[4]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Descriptive Titles of Jesus in the Quran:<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>(1) The Messiah<\/strong><\/span><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Prior to the appearance of Jesus, belief in the coming of the Messiah has been a basic and fundamental part of traditional Judaism. It is part of Maimonides\u2019 Thirteen Articles of Faith which are considered the minimum requirements of Jewish belief.<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[5]<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In the Shemoneh Esrei prayer<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[6]<\/span>, recited three times daily, modern Jewry prays for the Messiah who will be their king from the line of David to come and restore the glories of its golden age.\u00a0 In Hebrew, \u2018Messiah\u2019 means the \u2018anointed one.\u2019It is interesting to note that the Old Testament prophecy emphasizes the humanity of the Messiah by referring to him as the \u201c<strong>son of man<\/strong>\u201d (Daniel 7: 13)<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[7]<\/span> and not God.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The ideology of the Messiah has a central position in Christian theology.\u00a0 According to the Bible, Jesus claimed to be the expected Messiah of the Jews (John 4:25-26)[8],\u00a0 but they rejected him. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Therefore, Christians apply \u2018Christ\u2019 &#8211; the Greek word for \u2018Messiah\u2019 &#8211; to Jesus.\u00a0 In addition, they also maintain the Messiah will be the son of God.<br \/>The Quran corrects Jews and Christians in their excesses. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">It considers the Jews to be in the right in believing the Messiah to be human, but equates their rejection of Jesus to disbelief,<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\">And (We cursed them) for their disbelief\u2026 and their boastful claim: Indeed, we have killed the [so-called] Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of God. And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him.<\/span>\u201d (<strong>Quran 4:156-157<\/strong>)<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">On the other hand, the Quran agrees with the Christians who identify Jesus to be the Messiah, but considers their insistence that the Messiah is the son of God to be blasphemy:<br \/>\u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\">I<\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">nde<\/span>ed, they are unbelievers who say, \u2018God is the Messiah, the son of Mary.<\/span>\u2019\u201d (<strong>Quran 5:72<\/strong>)<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The truth, according to the Quran, is that:<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201cT<span style=\"color: #008000;\">he Messiah, son of Mary, was no other than a messenger; messengers before him had indeed passed away<\/span>.\u201d (<strong>Quran 5:75<\/strong>)<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Furthermore, the Quran states that the Messiah called to the worship of \u201cthe true God\u201d like all the prophets before him:<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\">But the Messiah said, \u2018O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord.<\/span>\u2019\u201d (Quran 5:72)<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Quran refers to Jesus as the Messiah (al-Maseeh) at least nine times.[9]\u00a0 One of the explanations given by Muslim lexicographers is that Jesus was the Messiah because he anointed the eyes of the blind to cure them (Quran 3:43; Mark 6:13; James 5:14), or because he used to lay hands on the sick.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">(2) Sign<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Quran describes Jesus to be a \u2018Sign,\u2019 an aayah in the Quran.\u00a0 In the terminology of the Quran a miracle is a \u2018sign\u2019 of God to display divine might and unrestricted ability to do acts outside the chain of cause and effect.\u00a0 In this sense, the virgin birth of Jesus is a miracle; a wonderful show of God\u2019s mighty power to do as He pleases.\u00a0 Therefore, Jesus is a \u2018sign\u2019 not only to the Israelites but to the entire world:<br \/>\u201cAnd We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign.\u201d (Quran 23:50)<br \/>\u201c\u2026We may make him a sign to men&#8230;\u201d (Quran 19:21)<br \/>\u201cand We made her and her son a sign for all peoples.\u201d (Quran 21:91)<br \/>In addition, the Quran declares Jesus\u2019 second coming to be a \u2018sign,\u2019 an announcement that the Judgment Day is coming close, \u201cAnd indeed, Jesus will be a sign for the Hour (of Judgment), so have no doubt about it, and follow Me.\u00a0 This is a straight path.\u201d (Quran 43:61)<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><strong>Footnotes: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">[1] Saheeh Al-Bukhari<br \/>[2] This is the \u2018literal\u2019 meaning.\u00a0 The most knowledgeable scholars have interpreted it to mean, \u2018may God keep him safe from all evil \u2019.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">[3] John 14:27<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">[4] The Bible refers to Jesus as the \u2018son of Mary\u2019 as well (Mark 6:3): \u201cIs not this thecarpenter, the son of Mary\u2026\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">[5] \u201c12. I firmly believe in the coming of the Messiah; and although He may tarry, I daily hope for His coming.\u201d The Jewish Encyclopedia (http:\/\/www.jewishencyclopedia.com)><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">[6] \u201cGive us understanding, O Eternal, our God, to know Thy ways, and circumcise our hearts to fear Thee; and do Thou pardon us that we may be redeemed. And remove from us bodily pain; and fatten us with the fertility of Thy land; and our dispersed ones from the four corners of the earth do Thou gather together; and they that go astray against the knowledge of Thee shall be judged; and upon the evil-doers do Thou lift up Thy hand: but may the righteous rejoice in the building of Thy city, and in the refounding of Thy Temple, and in the sprouting up of a horn unto David Thy servant, and in the preparing of a light for Jesse&#8217;s son, Thy Messiah. Before we call Thou wilt answer. Blessed be Thou, O Eternal, who hearest prayer\u201d.
